Little Chalfont’s own Junior Football Club!

The recently formed

Westwood Park Football Club

is officially affiliated to Little Chalfont Methodist Church.

This partnership will be of enormous benefit to both organisations. It gives the Church a great opportunity to become even more involved in village life and enjoy all the benefits of the support of the football club and its members. For the club it means that they have a permanent indoor base close to the park and the support of a long standing and well established local church and its facilities.

The club was started by a number of local fathers who felt the need to provide organised football coaching for children from local primary schools in an environment that supported the development of pure football skills, and to encourage their children to play as much sport as possible. The first ‘kick-abouts’ took place in 2006. And what better place to kick a football about on a Saturday morning than Westwood Park?

As more and more youngsters joined, a number of the Dads undertook and passed the Football Association basic coaching course and enquiries were made about forming a club under F.A. rules. It was a delight to see the development of the children over the winter months, and to reward them for their efforts, groups were entered into tournaments in the spring of 2008. The aim of the coaches was to let everyone have a go, and even with that philosophy the under 9s managed to get to the semi finals of the Delaford Colts Tournament.

Many more youngsters, both boys and girls, have joined the group over the last couple of years and now the number of children playing has grown to over 70, some coming from as far away as Rickmansworth. The club is affiliated to the Berks and Bucks F.A. and in the 2008/9 season the under 8s and under 10s are playing in the Chiltern Church Junior League. The under 7s play in the South Bucks Mini Soccer Conference. Hopefully the current Under 9 section will be able to play in the church league in the 2009/10 season.

The Westwood Park Football club vision is to help children to learn the core skills of football, to be comfortable on the ball, to be able to pass well, to be able to control and strike the ball well, to play well as a team, to avoid the ‘long ball’ game, to enjoy themselves and to have fun in a safe environment. Also to ensure that everybody gets a fair chance to play, and last but not least – to try if possible, and fulfilling the above – to win!

The club runs its training sessions on Saturdays from 9.30am to 11:00am and is actively seeking new signings to bolster its squads. Girls and boys between the ages of 6 and 10 years are invited to come along to Westwood Park for some trial sessions and the club always welcomes additional adult volunteers to assist with aspects of coaching, matches and administration.
